Freaky Reunion Story: Just Before Halloween, Black Cat Reappears After Seven Years!
Romeo disappeared from South Surrey. A microchip reunited him with his human – but that’s not the spooky part.
Get pets microchipped, RAPS urges.
Jomeo, a gorgeous, sleek black cat, was about a year old when he disappeared from his home in South Surrey seven long years ago.
Jomeo’s human, Ben Driedger, eventually gave up on ever finding his feline friend again and ultimately moved away from the area.
More recently, Ben’s girlfriend, Delia, was feeding a stray cat in her Burnaby neighbourhood. The cat was clearly used to human attention as he was quite affectionate. He was also cozying up to Sara, who lives nearby and was also feeding him.
Sara, a volunteer at the Regional Animal Protection Society, thought she should take the cat to RAPS and see if maybe he had a microchip.
Jomeo did. And the microchip indicated he was Ben’s cat.
No one knows how Jomeo got more than 30 kilometres from South Surrey to the Brentwood area. But what really freaked out everyone involved was that Jomeo somehow made friends with the girlfriend of his long-lost human. Fortuitous? Or nine lives by design?
Ben didn’t meet the stray cat his girlfriend Delia was feeding outside her home, but Delia had even joked that maybe this was the cat Ben had lost so long ago. The coincidences are freaky. And just in time for Halloween, this black cat is safely back with his human, seven (apparently lucky) years later – and acting like he had never disappeared.
Being a cat, Jomeo took the whole reunion in stride, according to Ben.
“He’s great,” says Ben. “It’s like we never missed a day. He still has same loving nature as he used to.”
Jomeo’s not sharing the story of his last few years, but he didn’t appear to lack for food. In addition to travel chops and survival skills, he seems to have a knack for getting people to serve him food.
To celebrate the reunion – and to remind people to microchip their pets – the RAPS Animal Hospital is offering 25% off microchipping with lifetime registration. We’re also offering a $100 eGift card to cover the first examination for animals who come in for microchipping. (Offer ends December 31, 2024.)
“Halloween is the most dangerous time of year for animals to become separated from their people,” says Eyal Lichtmann, CEO of the Regional Animal Protection Society. “Animal get freaked out by fireworks and other spooky things and flee for what they think is safety. Microchipping is the best way to reunite speedily if you ever become separated.
