Back Courtyard
The Back Courtyard is home to several of the sanctuary’s outdoor pens, which play an important role in helping new cats settle into their new home. When a colony first arrives, the cats spend time in one of these pens while they become familiar with the sights, sounds, and routines of the sanctuary. Once they’re comfortable, the gates are opened and they’re free to explore, but many continue returning to their original pen because it has become their safe place. The rear sections of the pens are closed to visitors so shy and feral cats always have somewhere peaceful to retreat. Some pens have special purposes. Pens 4, 7, and 8 are home to several feral cats that require regular medication, making it easier for staff to monitor and care for them while minimizing stress. Pen 5 is home to the “Newtons,” a remarkable group of cats rescued from a severe hoarding situation. Despite the difficult conditions they came from, they have made incredible progress and many now happily seek out affection from visitors and volunteers.
